The SPAD S.XII was a single-seat biplane - fighter aircraft of the French manufacturer Société Pour L'Aviation et ses Dérivés .

General

In 1917 SPAD equipped two machines of the successful type S.VII with engines that differed from the series type. A Renault 12D was installed in one machine and a Hispano-Suiza 8Bc with an output of 149 kW (200 hp) was installed in the other . The second machine was also equipped with a 37 mm cannon, in addition to the standard armament, the Vickers machine gun .

This machine, which had its first flight on July 5, 1917, became the prototype of a new series of aircraft, which SPAD received the type designation S.XII and was produced around 300 times.

Some machines received an even more powerful engine, a Hispano-Suiza 8Bec with 164 kW (220 PS) power. For the British Naval Air Force (RNAS = Royal Naval Air Service ), a small number of these machines were equipped with floats instead of wheeled undercarriages.

construction

The S.VII was a two-handled biplane.

The fuselage and wings were fabric-covered wooden structures with aluminum sheets in the front fuselage area.

Upper and lower wings were of the same length and designed without staggering.

The machine had a 2-wheel chassis and a tail spur.

Variants / further developments

The S.XII were freed from their armament after the First World War and thus served as civilian training aircraft for several years.

SPAD used the S.XIII as the basis for the training aircraft types SPAD 62 and SPAD 72.
