description

The SPS-40 was derived from the AN / SPS-31 and replaced the AN / SPS-6 and AN / SPS-29 and was introduced in 1961. It has a digital MTI operating mode, pulse compression , integrated IFF query and special operating modes for low-flying targets. The first models were considered to be relatively unreliable, but this changed with the introduction of further developed variants. In the meantime, most of the models have been retired and replaced by the AN / SPS-49 .

variants

  • AN / SPS-40: The basic version, produced by Lockheed.
  • AN / SPS-40A: Slightly modified variant, manufactured by Sperry
  • AN / SPS-40B: From this variant onwards, an IFF system is integrated. 43 systems were manufactured by Norden Systems.
  • AN / SPS-40C: Version with improved detection of low- flying aircraft and extended ECCM capacities.
  • AN / SPS-40D: This is a modified version of the A variant, the reliability of which has been significantly increased. It can also be integrated into the AN / SYS-1 combat system. It was produced by Westinghouse.
  • AN / SPS-40E: Although this variant was already ready for series production by Norden Systems, the US Navy suspended the financing.

In the meantime, a modernization for the E variant is offered, which replaces the analog traveling wave tubes with new, digital semiconductor components. This is intended to increase performance and increase reliability.
