SSN (novel)

SSN is a novel by Tom Clancy from 1996. It belongs to the genre of political and technical thriller and describes the warfare of a submarine. The title is derived from the abbreviation for Ship Submersible Nuclear , the official name of the United States Navy for nuclear-powered hunting submarines.

The novel revolves around a fictional war situation. SSN takes place in 1997 and revolves around the invasion of the People's Republic of China on the Spratly Islands in order to get to the local oil reserves. The novel is divided into 15 chapters, in which the Los Angeles- class submarine USS Cheyenne (SSN-773) , at the beginning as an escort of the carrier battle group around the USS Independence (CV-62) , later also as a lone hunt -The submarine fights against the Chinese fleet and ultimately destroys the expansionist wishes of the communist country.

The work was first published by Berkley Books in 1996 ; there is no German translation of the book, which is only published as a paperback . Unlike in Clancy's other novels, the story here focuses on the submarine, while the books about Jack Ryan contain much more complex plots.

The 1997 computer game Tom Clancy's SSN is based on the story of the novel .
