The SSV Oberkassel (officially: Spiel- und Sportverein Oberkassel 1919 eV ) was a sports club from the Oberkassel district of Düsseldorf . The first soccer team played for four years in the highest amateur league in the Lower Rhine region.

history

The club was founded on March 19, 1919 and quickly climbed the league ladder. As early as 1926, the SSV was playing in the then second-class 2nd district class Berg / Mark . There it was promoted to the 1st district class in 1929 , with the team remaining in second class due to a league reform. A year later, when they were promoted to the Berg / Mark district league, they were promoted to the top division, where the SSV met teams like Fortuna Düsseldorf or VfL Benrath .

The greatest success was fourth place in the 1931/32 season . After the introduction of the Lower Rhine Gauliga , the Oberkassel players continued to play in the second-class district class and later relegated to the district class. After the end of the Second World War , a Düsseldorf city championship was played in the 1945/46 season, in which the SSV was runner-up behind Benrath.

The Oberkassel team then played in the district class and in 1948 they made it to the state league , which was the highest amateur league on the Lower Rhine at the time. There, relegation was missed in the 1948/49 season by just one point. After a runner-up in 1951 behind VfB 03 Hilden , he returned to the national league a year later. After a tenth place in the 1953/54 season, it went back to the district class a year later. It was there in 1958 that it rose again. However, after the introduction of the Niederrhein Association League , the state league was only the second highest amateur league.

This time the SSV was able to establish itself in the regional league and in 1959, when promoted, was fifth and four years later even third. After that it went downhill again and in 1965 the Oberkasselers were relegated to the district class again. In 1972 SSV Oberkassel merged with Sportfreunde Düsseldorf-Lörick, founded in 1950, to form SC Düsseldorf-West . Today SC West plays in the Niederrhein football league .
