EBA Clearing (EBA stands for Euro Banking Association ) was founded in June 1998 by 52 European and international banks. The original task of EBA Clearing was to operate the private large- value payment system EURO1 , which the EBA had handed over to EBA Clearing. In the meantime, their range of tasks has also expanded to include the two platforms STEP1 and STEP2 . The EBA Clearing thus offers services for euro payments within Europe and, above all, the European Union. The company currently has 53 shareholder banks. The acceptance of the market has meant that the EBA Clearing, alongside TARGET2 , has established itself as a full-fledged clearing and settlement service provider not only for commercial payments. In March 2013, EBA Clearing also launched MyBank , an electronic authorization solution for online payments designed to support e-commerce growth in Europe.

Both EURO1 and STEP2 have been classified as systemically important by the European Central Bank (ECB) (“Systemically Important Payment Systems (SIPS)”). An infrastructure solution for instant payments is currently being worked on (SEPA Credit Transfer Instant; SCT Inst).

EBA Clearing's headquarters are in Paris, with additional offices in Brussels , Frankfurt am Main and Milan .

EURO1

EURO1 is a payment system for large amounts operated by EBA Clearing. Customers are European banks. The system is subject to German law ( current account principle / single obligation structure) and uses the SWIFT message and IT infrastructure .

STEP1

For small-amount transactions, EBA Clearing has been offering STEP1 since 2000, a single payment service for commercial transactions in euros for mostly small and medium-sized European banks. The technical infrastructure of STEP1 is the same as that of the EURO1 system.

STEP2

Together with SIA as a technological partner, EBA Clearing has been managing and operating the STEP2 platform since April 2003. STEP2 is a pan-European Automated Clearing House (PE-ACH) for bulk payments in euros. Alongside EURO1 and STEP1, the platform is the third pillar of EBA clearing for European payments and fulfills the principles for a PE-ACH adopted by the European Payments Committee (EPC).

Since the start of the European Payments Area (SEPA) on January 28, 2008, STEP2 has also been offering the European banks the STEP2 SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) service, which represents a uniform infrastructure for processing SEPA transfers. Since the introduction of the SEPA direct debit procedure on November 2, 2009, EBA Clearing has also been offering the processing of SEPA direct debits (SEPA Direct Debits) via the STEP2 SEPA Direct Debit (SDD) services. The prerequisite for processing via the STEP2 SCT and SDD services is that payments have the internationally standardized account number of the recipient ( international bank account number , IBAN) and the internationally standardized bank code (Business Identifier Code, BIC ) of the recipient bank .

With the SCT and SDD offers, STEP2 offers banks throughout Europe a single channel with which they can send and receive both SEPA transfers and SEPA direct debits. Today, the PE-ACH platform from EBA Clearing reaches almost 100 percent of all banks that have signed the SCT and SDD Scheme Adherence Agreements of the European Payments Council (EPC), enabling banks to offer their customers SEPA-compliant services throughout the European Payments Area to offer.

MyBank

MyBank is an electronic authorization solution for online payments and enables you to pay for online purchases across Europe using your familiar online banking environment. The solution can be used both for the authorization of SEPA transfers and for the creation of SDD e-mandates.

In the future, the solution may also be used for transactions in other currencies or for e-identity services.

Today MyBank is operated by PRETA SAS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of EBA Clearing.
