Subito

Subito. Documents from libraries (spelling: subito ; the name is derived from the Latin subito “suddenly”, “swiftly”, also translated “immediately”) is a non-profit, registered association that operates as a fee-based document delivery service for academic libraries . It provides the user with copies of journal articles or book excerpts and supports the loan of books. In this respect, Subito complements the interlibrary loan . In contrast to this, however, the user is assured that his request will be completed within three (normal order) or one working day (express order). The delivery takes place via libraries to their users or directly to the end customer.

history

Subito was founded in 1994 as a federal-state initiative to accelerate the supply of literature in Germany. When the service started operating in 1997, there were twelve academic libraries serving Subito. In 2002 there were 27 libraries, in 2019 Subito 37 libraries in Germany, plus four libraries in Austria and Switzerland.

After the entry into force of the "2. Korbes ”of the copyright reform in Germany on January 1, 2008, Subito was initially only able to deliver documents in Germany by post and fax. After the conclusion of license agreements, electronic delivery could finally be resumed, but under significantly worse conditions. The prices at which Subito delivers always include a royalty for VG Wort , which depends on the respective user group to which the delivery is made. The level of this bonus has remained unchanged since 2008.

After the Copyright Knowledge Society Act (UrhWissG) came into force on March 1, 2018, a new legal situation arose. Since then, Subito has been able to provide copies of non-free fonts to non-commercial users based on the restriction in Sections 60a – 60h UrhG , in particular Section 60e, Paragraph 5, UrhG . An exception are press products, which since then can no longer be ordered via Subito. As a result, prices have dropped considerably because the publishers can no longer charge separate license fees. Subito agreed the royalties directly with VG Wort.

Working method

Orders are accepted on the Subito website and delivered to end customers in Germany , Austria , Switzerland and Liechtenstein as well as to libraries worldwide by e-mail , fax or post. The prices depend on the urgency and the delivery route as well as on the user group to which the customer can be assigned.
