The North-East German Basketball Club Greifswald is a basketball club founded in 1991 in the university town of Greifswald in Western Pomerania .

predecessor

Its history goes back to 1965. This year, the University Sports Association (HSG) Wissenschaft of the University of Greifswald founded a new section for basketball. In their first year of competition, the men's team reached 6th place in the third-class Rostock district league. Between 1972 and 1982 both women and men played in the GDR league, the second highest division in GDR basketball. From 1983 to 1985 the men's team had to play in the district league again. In 1987 the basketball section left the HSG and on December 28, 1987 founded the ZBO Greifswald company sports association . In a new form of organization, the women's team celebrated its greatest success in Greifswald basketball to date with promotion to the upper league, the highest GDR basketball class.

After the establishment

When the company sports association lost its economic base after the fall of 1989, the sports club NOBA was founded in 1991, named after the main sponsor NOBA GmbH, a construction company based in Greifswald. The women's, men's and youth teams were included in the game operations at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state level. In 1998/99 the men's team played in the 2nd Regionalliga Nord.

In 1999, when the sponsor NOBA went bankrupt, the association "defined his name as N properly O stdeutscher Ba sketballverein" new. In 2000 the men rose again to the 2nd regional league. After good placements in 2001 (4th) and 2003 (3rd), relegation had to be accepted in 2004. In the 2002/03 season Michael Buse was the best scorer of all 2nd regional league seasons and then moved to the Bundesliga club TSK Würzburg . In 2005 both women and men won the state championship. While the women's team failed in the promotion games, the men were able to qualify for the 2nd regional league again.
