Sabah al-Khaled al-Hamad as-Sabah ( Arabic صباح الخالد الحمد الصباح, DMG Ṣabāḥ al-Ḫālid al-Ḥamad aṣ-Ṣabāḥ ; * March 3, 1953 in Kuwait City ) is a Kuwaiti diplomat and politician who served in various ministerial posts from 2006 until his appointment as Prime Minister of Kuwait in 2019. He is a high-ranking member of the Kuwaiti regent family as-Sabah .

Life

Sabah was born in 1953 as the grandson of the former Sheikh of Kuwait Ahmad al-Jabir as-Sabah . Many of his relatives also hold high positions in the Kuwaiti state. Sabah received a bachelor's degree in political science from Kuwait University in 1977 . Sabah went into foreign service in 1978. Until 1995 he worked in various functions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as a member of Kuwait's permanent mission to the United Nations (1983–1989). In 1995 he became Kuwait's ambassador to Saudi Arabia and was in office until 1998. During this time he was also Kuwait's envoy to the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC). From 1998 to 2006 he was head of the national security service.

In July 2006 he received his first ministerial function and was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Labor. During this time he was also the acting foreign minister. His tenure as Minister of Social Affairs and Labor lasted until October 2007 when he was appointed Minister of Information. In February 2010 he was appointed to the Supreme Petroleum Council. Sabah replaced Mohammad Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah as Foreign Minister in October 2011 . In a reshuffle on December 14, 2011, Sabah was also appointed Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs. On August 4, 2013, Sabah was appointed first deputy prime minister in addition to his post as foreign minister. He finally became Prime Minister of the country on November 19, 2019.

Sabah is married and has two children.
