Sachsenhausen fountain festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sachsenhausen Fountain Festival in the Sachsenhausen district of Frankfurt was first mentioned in a document in 1490 and is therefore one of the city's oldest festivals. Since the Sachsenhausen population at that time consisted mainly of craftsmen, farmers and fishermen, they could not pay the taxes required by the city for keeping the wells clean and had to take care of the cleaning themselves. The fountain festival was celebrated as the conclusion of the annual fountain cleaning. Since the middle of the 19th century, drinking water pipes have gradually replaced the wells, but the festival is still celebrated today.

Every year the Well and Notch Society selects the Sachsenhausen Well Queen. Together with the fountain school, it represents the reference to the historical roots of well cleaning and water protection.
