Sadanoyama Shinmatsu ( Japanese 佐 田 の 山 晋 松 , actually Ichikawa Shinmatsu ( 市 川 晋 松 ); * February 18, 1938 in today's Shinkamigoto in Nagasaki Prefecture ; † April 27, 2017 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese sumo wrestler . He was the 50th yokozuna and later chairman of the Japanese Sumo Association .
Life
Sadanoyama was a fighter for the renowned wrestling team Dewanoumi-Beya. In 1956 he first appeared as a wrestler and took part in his first makuuchi tournament in 1961 . In May of that year he already won a tournament, in March 1962 another, so that after a relatively short time he was promoted to the rank of höchstenzeki in the top division , which he led for seventeen tournaments. In the first half of 1965 he won 39 fights in three tournaments, two yusho (tournament victories) and the appointment to yokozuna.
The rise of Sadanoyama at a time that was marked by competition from great wrestlers like Taiho and Kashiwado can be credited to him as a remarkable achievement. However, Sadanoyama could never really break out of their shadows. At the turn of the year 1967/68 he won two more tournaments, but suddenly resigned shortly afterwards.
After the end of his sports career, Sadanoyama took over the management of Dewanoumi-Beya from his stable master, who had meanwhile also become his father-in-law and wanted to concentrate on his task as chairman (Rijicho) of the sumo association. When he himself took up this post in 1992, he exchanged his share in a similar way with the then Sakaigawa Oyakata, thus transferring him to the post of stable master at Dewanoumi. In 1998 he did not apply for re-election because he had differences with the other senior officials about the direction of the association. In 2003, shortly before his retirement, he exchanged the Sakaigawa share with the stable master of the Nakadachi-Beya.
This and that
In 1967 Sadanoyama had a short speaking role in the film James Bond 007 - You Only Live Twice , in which other well-known wrestlers of the time can be seen.
