Safe life

The " safe-life method" is a design philosophy that is mainly used in aircraft construction. It is based on a service life calculation of individual components (Life-Limited-Parts). During this period, it can be assumed that no component failure due to fatigue will occur. After this period, the component will be replaced regardless of whether it shows any damage. However, this method does not consider exceeding the tolerance limits, which u. a. can be exceeded by landing too hard with an aircraft . A construction based on the safe-life method is usually statically determined , which in the event of failure of a load-bearing component leads to the failure of the entire system.

An example from aircraft construction is the landing gear.

In contrast to the safe-life method, there are the fail-safe and damage-tolerance methods.
