SafeSearch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SafeSearch is a filtering technique that excludes websites with sexual content that is not suitable for minors under US law from search engine results . It was first used by the US company Google .

application

SafeSearch is commonly used to prevent children from accidentally accessing adult websites. The configuration of the search services takes place when you log in with a user name or by saving the settings in a cookie . SafeSearch filters the results according to American standards, which means that results that are not harmful to minors under German law (e.g. nudity) are filtered out, while results that are not suitable for minors under German law (e.g. violence) or even punishable by law (e.g. Holocaust denial) can be reported anyway.

Search engines and websites

In the meantime, not only Google and Yahoo offer this service, but also Microsoft's search engine Bing . There are also search portals that offer the same functionality in the form of a user-defined Google search. This means that although the search is carried out here via the Google database, the SafeSearch mode is preset for the search through access via the aforementioned portal, without the user having to make this setting himself or this information in a cookie saved on your own computer.

Mandatory use

On December 12, 2012, Google removed the ability to completely switch off SafeSearch for normal searches on its English-language search pages (on Google.com and .uk). Content classified as sexually explicit (this includes all nude pictures) is now only displayed when SafeSearch is switched off if sexually explicit search terms were also used.

history

SafeSearch was originally developed by Matt Cutts .
