A Safety Instruction Card (or Safety Card for short ) is a document that explains the procedures in the event of an emergency to passengers on board an aircraft .

Safety cards are usually found on all commercial flights. They are usually in the seat pocket in front of each passenger.

The cards are often laminated or made of plastic and contain instructions that are adapted to the respective aircraft types. With some low-cost airlines , the safety card is in the form of a sticker on the back of the seat back of the front seat. The cards mostly show images that graphically explain procedures to the passenger, such as the use of seat belts, the seat position in the event of an emergency landing , the use of the oxygen masks , the opening of the emergency exits or the use of the life jackets . As the cards mostly consist of graphics, they are also understood by passengers who speak a different language than the flight attendants.

In addition to normal safety cards, some airlines have additional cards in the rows of seats near the emergency exits above the wings, which are specifically intended to indicate the correct use of these emergency exits.

In order to standardize the safety cards used by airlines in Germany, the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt has issued guidelines that recommend the use of certain symbols and pictograms.

Safety cards are also a very popular generic item among people interested in aviation. Removal from board an aircraft is prohibited, as this is part of the emergency equipment of the machine. It is more practical and usually promising to ask the cabin crew for a card.
