The Saga University ( Japanese 佐賀 大学 , Saga daigaku ) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is located in Saga in Saga Prefecture .

history

The (older) Saga University was founded in 1949 through the merger of the three state schools. The three were:

  • the high school Saga ( 佐賀 高等学校 , Saga kōtō gakkō , founded in 1920),
  • the normal school Saga ( 佐賀 師範学校 , Saga shihan gakkō , founded in 1884), and
  • the normal youth school Saga ( 佐賀 青年 師範学校 , Saga his shihan gakkō , founded in 1925).

Since it was founded, the university has used the former headquarters of the Saga High School as the main campus (Honjō campus). It was opened with two faculties: (a) humanities and natural sciences and (b) education. The Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences was divided into four faculties: Agricultural Sciences (1955), Economics (1966), Natural and Engineering Sciences (1966), and Liberal Arts (1966). In 1996, the Faculties of Education and Liberal Arts were merged into one faculty: Faculty of Cultural Studies and Education.

In 2003 the (older) Saga University was merged with the Saga Medical University ( 佐賀 医科大学 , Saga ika daigaku , founded in 1976) to form the new Saga University.
