content

In earlier times a huge wolf was up to mischief on Lenzerheide . He tore sheep at regular intervals. He enjoyed himself at the village fountain and drank long there. The farmers tried to shoot him on this occasion, but when they pulled the trigger, their rifles would not fire.

One day a scissors grinder from Tyrol came through the area. The peasants complained of their annoyance to him. The man gave them the following advice: they should take a board with a knothole out of a rotten coffin. When the wolf came back to the well, they put a shotgun through the hole, and when they pulled the trigger there was a mighty bang. But not a wolf went down, but a capuchin , the priest of the village. The horrified peasants tried to cover the event with a cloak of silence and to keep the incident secret. They arranged a wolf burial and placed the animal in human form with a habit in the grave. The Tyrolean ran away and was no longer seen.
