On a winter evening in the past, the village youth drove down to Waltensburg by sledge. Strong boys drove the vehicles, behind most of them a girl sat. The youngest made the end of the sleigh train. In his back sat a maiden of breathtaking beauty, so that he hardly dared to look around, let alone speak to her. Finally he overcame himself and asked who she was and where she came from. She replied that she was the damsel of the Jörgenburg. For many years she has been waiting there for a young man to deliver her. That can only be achieved by those who manage to remain steadfast in circles drawn by themselves until the morning bell rings. So she spoke and then disappeared.

The young man had a queasy feeling, but the charm of the virgin and the prospect of receiving her were overwhelming in his heart. She wore lichen on her body that shone like flowing gold. So he went to the ruins at midnight. The damsel awaited him, dressed in noble robes. It immediately drew the magical circles, only to then depart. Now suddenly horses and riders urged the youth to look terribly. And beings he could not name tugged and tore at him in order to force him out of the orbits of the circles. But the fellow remained steadfast and persevered.

Finally, to his delight, he heard the ringing of the morning bell from the village in the distance. And he thought he could see the first dawn. He jumped out of the circles cheerfully, and indeed suddenly the maiden stood beside him. But she wept and lamented that she would have to lie in the dark tower with all her gold for many centuries. She said it and left the shaken youth behind. The sound of the bell and the veil of dawn - they had been nothing but an evil spell to mislead the youth. That hit the boy hard.
