Sahib-Fridolin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sahib-Fridolin (born February 15 or February 16, 1963 ; † December 23, 1994 ) was an Indian bull elephant who was born in the Knie circus and was later shot in a zoo. Sahib-Fridolin was the first Asian elephant to be born in Switzerland.

Life in the circus

Sahib-Fridolin, usually just called Sahib , was a son of the bull elephant Siam , who toured with the Knie Circus from 1956 to 1964 and then came to Paris, where he died in 1997. His mother's name was Ceylon . Siam had two offspring during his time at the circus: Sahib's half-sister Madura was born in Java in 1965 and killed in 1984 after killing one of her keepers. Sahib-Fridolin also had twelve other younger half-siblings whom his father Siam had fathered in Paris.

Sahib's mother abandoned the calf, which weighed 139 kilos when it was born, and Sahib had to be raised by hand by the carer Josef Haak and his wife. The elephant stayed at the Knie Circus until 1984 and was used both for normal performances and in the children's circus, in which the offspring of the artists presented themselves and selected animals. It was also used as a mount for visiting children outside of the performances. Numerous illustrations in the book Circus Children Have Many Friends by Irmgard Hensel from 1974 show Sahib in these functions.

Life in zoos

From 1984 to 1988 Sahib lived at the Leipzig Zoo , then he was given to the Belfast Zoo , where he stayed until 1991. His last stop was the St Thomas Wildlife Park cricket . He was shot there on December 23, 1994 because his behavior had allegedly become incalculable. No elephants have been kept in the park since 1999.
