Dan Albert John Koehl (born October 28, 1959 in Stockholm ) is a German-Swedish zookeeper , elephant trainer, stable master and programmer . As the developer of the Elephant Encyclopedia ( Elephant Encyclopedia ) he was described as "one of the most famous European elephant experts".

Live and act

Dan Koehl is the fifth child of Berlin-born Margot Fallai-Nordholm and Gösta Albert Köhl, chief engineer of a Swedish company. He grew up in California and Östermalm (Stockholm). A keen zoo visitor and aquarist , he completed training in animal husbandry and aquaristics at Stockholm's Enskede gårds gymnasium . Parallel to his subsequent studies at Stockholm University and the Swedish theater school Calle Flygare Teaterskola , he worked in pet shops and as a shepherd of the royal flock of sheep in Ladugårdsgärde . This was followed by training as a mahout in Sri Lanka and India as well as in elephant management and elephant training in the Hanover Zoo and in the Hagenbeck zoo by the elephant chief keeper Karl Kock.

Since the late 1970s, Dan Koehl has worked worldwide as a senior elephant keeper, stable master and advisor at zoos, circuses and ranches - in Europe in Skansen (Stockholm), in Cirkus Scott , in Borås djurpark Zoo , in Schönbrunn Zoo , in Dresden Zoo and Zoolandia (Finland), Parco Natura Viva (Italy), Kolmården Zoo , Circus Krone , Walding zoo and riding stables , Karlsruhe Zoo and Prague Zoo .

When two elephants from Skansen Zoo were to be relocated abroad to poorer living conditions, Koehl took part in a campaign that sparked a nationwide debate. After some heated controversy, the elephants were nevertheless shipped to Cricket St Thomas Wildlife Park in England and died prematurely there.

In the Kolmården zoo, Koehl was entrusted with the care of two elephants as the “royal stableman”, a gift from King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand to King Carl XVI. Gustaf .

Koehl was involved in various animal, wildlife care and nature conservation foundations that relate particularly to elephants. As Deputy Managing Director of the European Elephant Keepers and Managers Association (EEKMA) from 1998 to 2008, he worked on the safety guidelines for elephant management (2002) and was chairman of the Swedish National Union of Aquaristic Societies (SARF).

In addition, Koehl served as a licensed seaman with the Swedish Auxiliary Naval Corps and for civilian purposes at sea.

Koehl has lived in Phnom Penh , Cambodia since 2010 and has a residence on the Swedish island of Ljusterö .

In parallel to lectures on animal husbandry, Dan Koehl documented research on elephants and in 1995 created the Elephant Listserver elephant@Listserver.wineasy.se in cooperation with the Elephant Research Foundation (ERF) and its founder Jeheskel Shoshani , who helped him create a FAQ section and supported the Elephant Encyclopedia with zoological research on its website .

Since 2006 it has also included a database , created by Koehl with MySQL and programmed in PHP 7. It is the world's largest research database on individual elephants, which is used by journalists, organizations and for scientific work, especially with regard to the elephant herpes virus (EEHV, Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus ) and with regard to tumor suppression in elephants, in order to possibly gain new insights into fighting cancer in humans.
