Sahlep (also Sahleb or Sahlab ) is a sweet, hot milk drink that is common in Arab countries and Turkish cuisine and is especially served in winter.

In addition to milk and sugar, Sahlepp powder is the main component of the drink. This is made from orchid roots of the salep herb ( orchid ) that grow wild in forests . It can be refined with sugar, ground cinnamon, desiccated coconut, crushed peanuts, hazelnuts and / or pistachios. Since the Salep starch is only available in Turkish and Arab shops within Europe, usually with sugar and other ingredients, corn or wheat starch is often used for preparation.

Due to the great popularity of this drink , however, this type of orchid is now an endangered plant species in some Turkish regions. According to an article published in the Turkish daily Hürriyet , for example, the roots are carelessly removed in Kahramanmaraş .
