After the German Olaf Pollack had secured the leader's jersey on the first flat stage after winning the final sprint, the almost 100-kilometer mountain stage followed on the second day. There won Jens Voigt of Team CSC 48 seconds ahead of the nearest rival group favorites Alejandro Valverde , Andreas Kloden , Fränk Schleck and Damiano Cunego . In the final 8.3-kilometer individual time trial, Swede Thomas Lövkvist won with a three-second lead over Alejandro Valverde. A seventh place, 14 seconds behind, was enough for Voigt to achieve his third overall victory after 1999 and 2004.
