geography
The city lies on the banks of the Aisne river and the parallel Canal des Ardennes , which is a navigable connection between the greater Paris area and Belgium through the Ardennes area.
history
- In the Middle Ages the place was called Ecry , named after the lords of Ecry, who have the area as a fief.
- In 1199 the Fourth Crusade was initiated in Ecry at a tournament and after a sermon by Fulk von Neuilly .
- During the Hundred Years War , the English occupied Ecry.
- After major destruction in the Thirty Years War , Jean-Jacques de Mesmes , Count d'Avaux, acquired Ecry in 1671. He gave the place the new name Avaux-la-Ville .
- Count d'Avaux had a church built in the baroque style from 1680 to 1685 .
- After the death of the last Count d'Avaux, his two daughters sold the entire property. In 1728 the rest of the Avaux county became the property of Baron Claude-François Bidal .
- He now gave the place the name Asfeld , derived from his inherited title of Baron von Harsefeld ( Germany / Lower Saxony ). Harsefeld is called Hasfeld in the colloquial Low German language . Since the French cannot pronounce the H well, Hasfeld became Asfeld.
- Claude François Bidal, 1st marquis d'Asfeld , became Marshal of France in 1734 .
- After the Marshal's death in 1743, his son Claude-Etienne followed him and became 2nd Marquis of Asfeld.
- As a result of the French Revolution , the Asfeld family was expelled, the castle was torn down and the goods were sold.
