Barby is a French commune with 415 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Rethel , the Canton of Rethel and the Pays Rethélois municipal association .
geography
The Aisne runs through the southern municipal area, where, like the Ardennes Canal, it forms the municipal boundary in sections. The river Vaux crosses the municipality on a short section to the west and flows into the Aisne at the municipal boundary with Château-Porcien . Barby is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Arnicourt and Sorbon in the north, by the canton capital Rethel in the east, Acy-Romance in the southeast, Nanteuil-sur-Aisne in the south and by the municipalities of Taizy in the canton of Château-Porcien in the southwest and Château-Porcien in the West and Écly to the northwest.
history
During excavations, a Bronze Age grave was discovered in Barby . The village was crossed by a Roman road from Rethel to Château-Porcien.
In the Middle Ages, the village of Gerson, which has now disappeared, was located on today's territory of the municipality . Jean de Gerson , who later became Chancellor of the University of Paris , was born here in 1363 .
