Shihan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shihan ( Japanese 師範 , "teacher", "role model") is a Japanese term from Budo .

meaning

The Shihan is - not only in Budo - a teacher of teachers or a professor; but is also often translated simply as "master". It is an honorary designation for a high dignitary, high teacher and master, instructor and educator. Jigoro Kano , the founder of judo , also held this honorary title .

origin

Shi ( jap. ) can be translated as “teacher” or “expert”, han ( jap. ) as “wise” or “example”.

use

The Shihan is a grand master of martial arts . If he is in charge of a style or school, he is also called Saikō Shihan ( 最高 師範 , "supreme teacher", "style keeper"). The title Shihan is conferred and cannot be achieved through graduation. The minimum requirement is 7th Dan , depending on the martial art  . In the Iaidō -style direction Seishin-Ryu Iaido, for example, the title Shihan can be achieved at the earliest two years after the examination for 5th Dan and awarding of 6th Dan. Using the example of the Iaidō style Seishin-Ryu, this title is the highest title, and others such as the title Hanshi (10th Dan) can be achieved. If you get the 10th Dan and at the same time are the representative of the Ryu , then you would be Hanshi Shihan . Since the individual Budo types cannot be compared, the individual degrees such as B. Do not compare 1st Dan Iaidō with 1st Dan Karate or 1st Dan Taekwondo , not even the 1st Dan within the individual Budo type is comparable, as there are different schools and styles.

Other teachers of this direction can also receive the title Shihan if they, like the Saikō Shihan, have dedicated themselves to the preservation and dissemination of this style. For this, however, at least the 5th Dan is a prerequisite, so you must have completed the normal teaching phase.

It is the highest of three honorary degrees. The lowest level Fuku Shidōin describes an "assistant teacher" or "representative of the teacher". Above it is the Shidōin , which denotes a "teacher" or "instructor". The top level is that of Shihan, which very experienced teachers would wear.

Shihan in Reiki

In Reiki , the Japanese art of healing, the "Reiki teacher" (in Japan) is also called Shihan. For this it is necessary that the previous degrees (Shoden, Okuden and Shinpeden) have been learned and each completed with a Rei Ju , an energy transfer (initiation). A Shihan is entitled to initiate other people into Reiki.
