Shidōin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shidōin ( Japanese 指導員 ) is a Japanese form of address that is mainly used in Budō .

meaning

The word means “teacher” or “instructor” and is commonly used to denote an official, less experienced teacher within an institution. Further meanings of Shidōin are leader, leader, example.

origin

The word is derived from Shidou (suru) 指導 (す る) . It is made up of yubi which means finger or as a verb sasu 指 す to show. Michibiku means leading. What together means instructor, leader and leader or the respective verb form. Shido also stands for chivalry, the samurai's code of honor .

use

A very experienced teacher would have the title Shihan . The level below the Shidoin is the Fuku Shidōin , which indicates an assistant teacher.

Different budō and associations have different requirements for the use of this salutation, but in general it refers to the 4th or 5th dan . However, these forms of address are often detached from the Dan grades and a lot more specific than the more general " Sensei " .

The salutations Fuku Shidōin, Shidōin and Shihan are roughly equivalent to the salutations Renshi , Kyoshi and Hanshi , which are often used in other Budō.

The Aikikai style of Aikido adopted this labeling system for teachers in the 1970s, around the time the International Aikido Federation was founded .
