The Sail Rock (literally translated from English Sail Rock ) is a cliff in the archipelago Heard and McDonald Islands in the southern Indian Ocean . It rises 1.5 km northwest of Shag Island and 11 km north of Heard Island .
The rock appears incorrectly positioned for the first time on maps of the US sealer captain H. C. Chester from 1860, who was operating in the waters around the archipelago at the time. A more precise mapping was carried out in 1874 during the British Challenger Expedition (1872–1876).
