history

The church was built in the Victorian colonial period above Kent Bay in Whangaroa Harbor and opened in late summer 1883. The worshipers came by ship or on foot. Countless stairs then led up to the church. Roads weren't built back then.

Over the years, Saint Pauls has seen a lot: the decline of the Kauri wood industry, the destruction of the school in front of the church by fire, the construction of the clubhouse for deep-sea sport fishermen and the construction of the marina.

In 1926 the original Kauri shingle roof was abandoned and replaced by corrugated iron. This in turn was replaced in 2003 by the modern “Coloursteel”. A very steep road up to the church had been built as early as the 1950s. In order to raise funds, the church property was parceled out and sold except for a remainder of 4,000 square meters. At that time the church was renovated and in 1975 a complete restoration followed after funds could be collected for it. Another renovation of the church followed in 2007.
