Kaeo is a village in the Far North District in the Northland region ofthe North Island of New Zealand over two miles.
Origin of name
The name of the settlement and the river Kaeo River was named by the Māori after a shell that is native to the river and is called Kaeo by the Māori .
geography
The village is located around 20 km northwest of Kerikeri and around 46 km east of Kaitaia not far from the east coast of Northland . The Kaeo River runs through parts of the village and flows into Whangaroa Harbor around 4.5 km northwest . The village is surrounded by mountains up to 385 m high.
history
In June 1823, the two missionaries Samuel Leigh and William White bought around 12 hectares of land and founded a mission station for the Wesleyans in nearby Whangaroa Harbor . However, it was destroyed in 1827 under the leadership of Hongi Hika by the Ngāpuhi on their war campaign and abandoned by the mission church.

In the 2013 census, the town had 453 inhabitants, 9.3% less than in the 2006 census.
economy
The village lives primarily from agriculture. Less than 2 km north of the village is a quarry where kaolin , a type of china clay, is mined.
Location description
Kaeo is the social center of the region around the Whangaroa River and houses a library, an Anglican and a Methodist church, shops and the fire department in addition to the local council .

The New Zealand State Highway 10 runs through Kaeo and connects the village with Mangonui in the northwest, Awanui in the west and Kerikeri in the southeast.
Education
Kaeo is home to Whangaroa College, a college with a decile rating of 2 and 146 students, as well as Kaeo Primary School, a primary school with a decile of 1 and 90 students in 2009.
Sightseeing
The village's Leigh Street is home to the volunteer-run Whangaroa County Museum , which features a collection of local history items from the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior and the sailing ship Boyd .
