Mangonui is a village in the Far North District of the Northland regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the village comes from the Māori language and means something like " great shark ".
geography
The village is located around 27 km northeast of Kaitaia at Mangonui Harbor , a natural harbor with access to Doubtless Bay . South of the village rise the Maungataniwha Range , from which numerous streams and rivers flow north and in part feed the Mangonui Harbor .
history
At the beginning of the 19th century, Mangonui was an important port for merchant ships and a place where Kauri wood was processed and handled. The oldest building in the village, the Mangonui Court House , bears witness to this period.
population
At the 2013 census, the village had 548 inhabitants.
tourism
Mangonui forms together with the towns of Taipa , Cable Bay and Cooper's Beach a number of small coastal resorts, which are collectively known under the name Taipa-Mangonui . The many beaches in the region offer opportunities for swimming and water sports. Boats for deep sea fishing can be rented in Mangonui .
