The Doubtless Bay is a large bay Far North District of the Region Northland on the northeast coast of the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The name of the bay goes back to the British navigator and explorer James Cook , who sighted the bay on December 9, 1769, but was unable to enter due to adverse winds. He noted in his logbook : “ doubtless a bay ” (“undoubtedly a bay”). The Frenchman Jean François Marie de Surville was eight days late when he sailed the bay on December 17th and named it “ Laurtiston Bay ”.

geography

The Doubtless Bay is located approximately 20 km north-east of Kaitaia on the northeast coast of the Northland Peninsula . The bay is around 17 km wide and extends around 14 km inland. The Karikari Peninsula forms the north and west sides of the bay. Here are Whatuwhiwhi and Tokerau Beach , from which the sandy beach of the same name stretches south over the entire west side of the bay. On the south coast, the New Zealand State Highway 10 runs with the towns of Aurere and the towns of Taipa , Cable Bay and Mangonui, which have merged into Taipa- Mangonui .

In the southeast the Oruati River flows into Mangonui Harbor , which is separated from Doubtless Bay by the Osprey Head Peninsula . In the southeast are the settlements of Hihi and Waitetoki . The bay is open between Knuckle Point on the Karikari Peninsula and Berghan Point with the approximately 10 km wide northwest side to the Pacific Ocean .
