Mangonui Harbor is a natural harbor in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The Mangonui Harbor is located approximately 28 km north east of Kaitaia , at the southern end of Doubtless Bay with the places Mangonui and Hihi . The approximately 4 km 2 large natural harbor has a length of around 4 km and is 2.1 km at its widest point. The Mangonui Harbor drains an area of around 250 km 2 via its tributaries , with the Oruaiti River and the Kenana River providing the largest tributaries . The New Zealand State Highway 10 runs past the south side of the natural harbor and crosses the two rivers and part of Paewhenua Island .

description

The Mangonui Harbor is under the influence of the tide. The port entrance is bordered by two opposite hills, of which the western one has a height of around 95  m and on its top was the former Rangikapiti , a village of the Māori tribe of the Ngati Kahu . The southern edges and part of the eastern banks consist of mangroves , with the island of Paewhenua Island, lying between the two estuaries of the Oruaiti River and Kenana River , being enclosed to the south by the mangroves.

environmental issues

The fact that the mangroves spread in the southern area of the water and in the river mouths does not meet with the approval of all residents of the area. Critics complain that with the decision of the Ministry of Works in 1969, the road construction with the crossing of the two rivers and the island in between changed the flow conditions of the rivers and the southern area of the natural harbor was therefore increasingly silted up, estimated 30 cm in a good 32 years.
