The Sakitama-Kofungruppe ( Japanese. 埼 玉 古墳 群 , Sakitama-kofungun ) is a burial mound in the city of Gyōda , Saitama Prefecture in Japan . In the area there are nine large kofun and 40 smaller burial mounds, which were built in the 5th to 7th centuries, i.e. still in the Asuka period , when the construction of burial mounds was already out of fashion in western Japan. The Kofun have both circular and keyhole-shaped floor plans.

It is believed that the tombs were built by influential families who ruled over the northern Kantō area. The surrounding smaller burial mounds of their vassals were destroyed at the beginning of the Shōwa period (1930s) when the surrounding swamps were drained. On August 8, 1938, the still preserved large Kofun were placed under monument protection. In 1966 the Office for Cultural Affairs introduced the integrated monument protection and open-air museum concept of the Fudoki no Oka , and the Sakitama Kofu group also belongs to the Sakitama Fudoki no Oka ( さ き た ま 風土 記 の 丘 ). In this context, the Sakitama Shiseki no Hakubutsukan History Museum ( 埼 玉 県 立 さ き た ま 史跡 の 博物館 , Saitama-kenritsu ~ , English Museum of The Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds , 36 ° 7 ′ 30 ″  N , 139 ° 28 ′ 32 ″  O ) opened. In 1976 a 37.4 hectare area including the burial mounds was designated as "Sakitama Kofun Park" ( さ き た ま 古墳 公園 ) as a public park.

The Inariyama kofun is the oldest of the group, dating from the second half of the 5th century. It is also the site of a sword with a gold-plated engraving ( Inariyama sword ). Its 115-character inscription is one of the oldest surviving evidence of the use of Chinese writing in Japan (see Kanji ). The Maruhakayama kofun is Japan's largest round kofun.
