Sakoa is a region in southwest Madagascar , which is characterized by dry thorn forest (s) and is mainly known for its coal deposits, of which the Sakoa deposit in particular has a high quality.

Sakoa coal deposit

Coal was first discovered in Sakoa in 1908. Small-scale mining was carried out during the Second World War . The drill results indicate that the field is large with seams up to 12 m (39 ft) thick in places. The product is a thermal coal, similar to the coal currently exported from South Africa, and likely used in power plants in India and Western Europe. Estimates for the coal deposit in 2015 assumed that 200 million tons of coal can be extracted and that it has an estimated potential of over one billion tons. It is expected that most of the coal will be mined in open pit mining and that production will initially amount to five million tons per year.

There are a number of licensees in the field. The vast majority of the licenses of commercial value is of Madagascar Consolidated Mining, a subsidiary of Red Iceland Minerals , (s) held by Sam Malin was established to review the resources of the field and developed. Pan African Mining has a significant number of licenses on the periphery of the field. Other coal deposits adjoining the Sakoa coal deposit include Ianapera, Imaloto, Sakamena and Vohibory.
