The salad spinner is a kitchen appliance that removes excess water from wet lettuce leaves using the centrifuge principle .

It consists of a round bowl in which a basket is rotatably mounted on a pin, and a lid that contains a manual drive mechanism - a crank with a simple gear or a cable pull (similar to a reversing starter ).

The rotation of the basket pushes its contents against the basket ( centrifugal force principle ). This stops the lettuce leaves, but lets the water pass through. The water collects below the basket in the bowl or, depending on the version, flows directly off. There are also salad spinners with plugs to close the bottom so that the lettuce can be washed in the same device before spinning. The functional principle is the same for spin dryers and washing machines .

The material used to make salad spinners is mostly plastic ; There are also versions made of stainless steel - where only the basket may consist of it.
