Salem (brand of cigarettes)

Salem or Salem Aleikum are word marks for cigarettes that were first used in the early 20th century by the Oriental Tobacco and Cigarette Factory Yenidze in Dresden . The cigarettes in question were the Salem Gold , Salem Auslese , Salem Lucullus and Salem No. 6. The term Salem is based on the Arabic greeting As Salamu Aleikum and should refer to the oriental tobacco used for these cigarettes.

In 1886 Hugo Zietz (1853–1927) founded the Oriental Tobacco and Cigarette Factory Yenidze in Dresden , named after a place in the former Ottoman Empire from which he obtained most of his tobacco. The company also became known for its new factory built in 1908/1909 , which is reminiscent of an Islamic mosque . In 1925, the tobacco company took over Reemtsma the Yenidze and continued to produce in the Dresden plant varieties Salem Gold , Salem read and Salem No. 6 .

After the Second World War, Salem cigarettes continued to be produced from 1947 . There were two different varieties of this brand: Salem yellow and Salem red . The cigarettes were produced for a few years in the Yenidze factory, which has since been expropriated, and later in the VEB United Dresden Cigarette Factory , later the VEB Tobacco Combine Dresden. 1990 cost a box of 20 filter cigarettes 1.60 Mark and belonged to the manufactured also in Dresden Karo thus among the cheapest cigarettes in the GDR.

Until 2016, the Yenidze Tabak- und Zigarettenfabrik GmbH Hamburg provided Salem No. 6 ago, a filterless cigarette. This brand was owned by Reemtsma, but it was not stated on the packaging and it did not appear in the Reemtsma range. In May 2016, the Reemtsma Group announced that it would stop producing the Salem No. 6 set.

The RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company has been producing Salem menthol filter cigarettes since 1956 , named after the town of Winston-Salem , where the company is headquartered. Salem Green-Label and Salem Black-Label are offered in various light, ultralight and slim versions on the US market . In 2015 the brand was sold to ITG Brands. The Reyno brand corresponds to these cigarettes on the German market . In the Asian markets and in a different package, Japan Tobacco International, which acquired RJR International (the non-US tobacco operations of RJR) in 1999, markets the brands Salem Full Flavor, Salem Lights, Salem Super Lights and Salem One. These are also exclusively menthol filter cigarettes.
