The Salford Quays Millennium Lift and Footbridge is a 91.2 meter lift bridge in the urban area of Salford , Greater Manchester , England.

description

The 91.2 meter long road and pedestrian bridge with a lifting height of 18 meters over the Manchester Ship Canal was completed in 2000. The design comes from the Spanish engineering firm Carlos Fernández Casado . The lift bridge was built by the Thai-Danish company Christiani & Nielsen .

The electric lifting device for the orthotropic slab is operated from the city's power supply network, but has its own diesel-powered backup system in the event of a power failure. The lifting time is around three minutes. The weight compensation takes place via four rope-guided concrete counterweights. The lifting process is controlled by the control tower of the Salford Quays canal. The pedestrian and vehicle barriers and the lifting mechanism are also operated from there.

Trivia

The lift bridge is part of the backdrop for the BBC North West news program "Tonight television news program". The bridge is illuminated in color at night.
