Salinometer
A salinometer is a measuring device used to determine the salinity of salt water .
Many physical properties of water change with the amount of dissolved salt. These dependencies are used for different types of saline torches. The more salt there is in the water, the higher:
- the density (measurement with a hydrometer )
- the refractive index (determined with a refractometer )
- the electrical conductivity (since the dissolved salt acts as a freely movable charge carrier ). Salinometers used in modern oceanography determine the ratio of the conductivities of the sample to standard water using galvanic and / or inductive methods for the purpose of increased accuracy .
- the speed of sound .
