The saloon car of the Sestao – Galdames mine railway is the oldest surviving railway vehicle in Spain .

history

The saloon car was built in 1876 by the Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Company Ltd. built in Manchester and delivered to the Sestao – Galdames Mining Railway ( Ferrocarril de Sestao a Galdames ). This railway was used to transport mines and connected the places Sestao and Galdames . It was built in the unusual gauge of 1115 millimeters and was shut down in 1968 .

The saloon car was used by the management to drive on the railway systems. It was in use until the end of the railway infrastructure in 1968. The car is now stored in the vehicle hall of the Basque Railway Museum in Azpeitia and is awaiting reconditioning.
