The Salvadoriente ( Salvadorina waigiuensis ) lives endemically in the highlands of the island of New Guinea . The duck is little explored.

features

The Salvadoriente is a small duck and reaches a length of 43 cm. Their head is dark brown, their bill yellow. The body has a dark brown and white stripe pattern. The feet are orange. It is the only duck in New Guinea with a yellow beak, dark brown head and stripes on its trunk and is therefore unmistakable.

Way of life

There are sightings of the Salvadoriente at an altitude of 70 to 4100 meters, but it is rare below 600 meters and mainly occurs at high altitudes. It is monogamous and territorial, lives and breeds during the dry season on the banks of fast-flowing streams, rivers and mountain lakes. The area is defended throughout the year. One area investigated along the Baiyer River was 1,600 meters long, and one on the Menga River was only 160 meters long. Two to four eggs are laid. The male participates in raising the young. The duck is omnivorous and searches for food by diving.

Danger

The IUCN specifies a population of 2500 to 20,000 specimens that should be stable or slowly declining. The species is therefore considered endangered. It is endangered by hunting by humans and feral dogs, habitat destruction by mining, the resulting contamination of the rivers and the construction of the rivers by hydroelectric projects. Introduced trout may also compete with the ducks for food resources. In Papua New Guinea the Salvadoriente is under protection.
