The salt store in Stans is a warehouse built in 1700/1701 . It is located in the center of Stans, near the valley station of the Stanserhorn cable car and is a listed building as a cultural asset of regional importance.

history

The salt store was built according to a decision of the District Councilor of Nidwalden in 1699 and was also intended to serve as a granary. Every Nidwalden community had to contribute materials such as stones, wood, sand or bricks to the construction of the storage facility. On the gable of the north facade you can see the coat of arms of the builder and land manager Nicolaus Keizer , as well as two lions with the Nidwalden coat of arms and a two-headed eagle. The inscription reads: "HER HR NICOLAUS KEISER GEWESNER OBERVOGT 6 YOUR SECKELLMEISTER OF THE TIME RULING LANDTAMS AND BUILDER DISES MAGAZINE HOUSE NEUW ERWELTER LANDTVOGT UFF DER RÜFFIER AND COMISARI NACHER BÄLLENZ AO 1700".

Due to the abandonment of the official salt shelf , the building was used for other purposes as early as 1709, for example as a theater from 1722 to 1865. Between 1884 and 1898, a girls' secondary school was located on the ground floor. From 1872 the collections of the historical association were housed in the salt store and since 1907 the entire building has been used as a museum. Today the salt store is one of four houses in the Nidwalden Museum in Stans. The museum has three floors that are used for special exhibitions.
