The Salt Museum of Bad Sooden-Allendorf is a 1979 opened museum , which the nearly 1,000-year history of salt production in Allendorf documented.

The museum in 1974 by a community of interests within the local association was founded for History . As a museum building, this community chose the so-called Söder Tor , which is also important in connection with the almost 1000-year history of salt extraction in the city. In 1979, after extensive construction work, the museum was opened to visitors.

After the closure of the salt works in 1906, the city administration had already decided in 1913 to equip a museum. Many of the factory's original devices were kept in this way.

The salt works, not only in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, with all of its production facilities was also called " Saline ". The Söder Tor, which houses the museum, was once the only access to this saltworks. This was to protect against salt smuggling with controls in the gate, which - given the once high value of salt - was a major problem. Accordingly, a prison was also housed in the gate building.

The most important exhibit is a copy of the so-called Salt Bible, which was written by Johannes Rhenanus in the 16th century . The original is in the library of the Mining Authority in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, another copy is in the library of the Kassel University. The specimen in the Salt Museum is the only one that is in a public exhibition.

The museum also shows the original equipment, photographs, drawings and models mentioned.
