Pietro Vittorelli OSB (born June 30, 1962 in Rome ) is an Italian Benedictine monk and emeritus archabbot of the Montecassino monastery .

Life

After graduating from high school, he studied medicine at La Sapienza University . In 1989 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino , where he made his profession on January 13, 1991 in the hands of his abbot Bernardo Fabio D'Onorio . He studied theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo .

He was ordained a priest on June 26, 1994 in Montecassino . Since 1997 he was the novice master and secretary of his abbot. The monks of his monastery elect Pietro Vittorelli as the 191st Abbot of Montecassino on October 25, 2007 after his predecessor Bernardo D'Onorio had been appointed Archbishop of Gaeta . Pope Benedict XVI confirmed this election on November 17 of the same year. On December 28, 2007 he received the abbot's benediction and was introduced to his office.

On June 12, 2013, Pope Francis accepted his resignation due to health reasons (stroke).

Criminal offenses

The Italian tax authorities are investigating Vittorelli for embezzlement and money laundering . He is said to have embezzled more than 500,000 euros during his tenure as Archabbot. The prosecutor ordered the seizure of his account in the amount of this sum. Further investigations into suspected money laundering are ongoing.
