The Salzstadel is a former building in Augsburg for storing salt. Originally, the salt was stored in the sealed house on Maximilianstrasse. When this building was demolished in 1809, the municipal granary with seven floors at the old entrance was used as a salt store. Together with other storage buildings in downtown Augsburg, it was supposed to provide the population with food in times of war and emergency. When Augsburg ceased to be a fortress in the 19th century, these buildings also gradually disappeared. The Salzstadel was demolished in 1876 to make room for the newly planned city theater .
