Georg Schwenk

Georg Schwenk (born June 3, 1863 in Dresden ; † May 26, 1936 there ) was a German painter and writer .

Life

Schwenk was a son of the sculptor Wilhelm Schwenk . He studied from 1880 to 1888 and again from 1894 to 1896 at the Dresden Art Academy . His teachers included Leon Pohle , Hermann Prell and Heinrich Ferdinand Hofmann . From 1899 he lived and worked in the Künstlerhaus Dresden-Loschwitz until his death . For the Loschwitzer church he created during the renovation of the church stained glass, the painter Eduard Leonhardi had designed. They were destroyed in the bombing of Dresden in 1945 and not replaced. His mural The Education of Young People in the Spirit of Schiller is in the auditorium of the Schiller School in Loschwitz , but was painted over in 1951. The murals in the Maternihospital and in the Maria Anna Children's Hospital (today a special needs school in Trachenberge belonging to the vocational training center for technology and economics ) were also from Schwenk. Further wall paintings can be found in Bautzen in the citizens' hall of the Gewandhaus and in Eisenach's Nikolaikirche .

Schwenk's painting Treu der Natur from 1900, which, like the painting Towards the Light, was in the Lahmann sanatorium on the Weißen Hirsch in Dresden, “must be classified as a cult image of the time.” From 1903 it even became a characteristic work of the life reform movement distributed on postcards and in color print. In this painting, Schwenk depicted himself as a close-to-nature family man who plucks an apple from a tree for a child. Although he had a large family, Schwenk was in reality rather "the type of pious hermit who was completely devoted to his work". His historical painting “Bautzen's citizens successfully put down a Hussite attack in 1429” (around 1925), which was in the civic hall of the Gewandhaus Bautzen , was destroyed when the Gewandhaus burned on 27./28. Destroyed in October 1976.

As a writer he appeared with his drama Gottfried von Gutenbronn , which premiered in 1933.
