Sambor is a personal name.

Origin and meaning

The origin of the name is unclear. It was only mentioned for the Pomeranian prince Sambor I and his descendants. There are no other namesake known in Central Europe. Sam- may be of Baltic origin and is not used in Slavic names.

In Slavonic, the meaning would derive from the two words "sam" (alone) and "bor" (fight).

  • Sambor I. (* around 1150; † 1207), from 1187 Duke of Pomerania in his function as Polish governor under the supremacy of the Senior Duke of Cracow
  • Sambor II. (* Around 1208; † 1277 or 1278), from 1220 to 1270 with interruptions Duke of Pommerellen in Liebschau and Dirschau
