arrest

After visiting his family in the Palestinian Territories, Allawi, who has a Jordanian passport, was arrested by the Israeli military on August 10, 2011. The military threatened Allawi with indicting him of smuggling funds from Afghanistan into the West Bank if he did not agree to act as an informant for Israel.

A military court found Allawi guilty of illegal contact with Hamas. He also offered to support the organization. The journalist was released on September 26 on bail of $ 1,400. Human Rights Watch criticized the journalist's arrest.

Allawi's sentence has been suspended for three years.

background

According to information from the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Israeli government accuses the Qatar broadcaster Al-Jazeera of spreading hostile propaganda. Al-Jazeera reporters were temporarily boycotted against reporting as early as 2008. According to the SZ, the Jerusalem leadership used the Allawi case to launch a new attack on the station: In a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office it is said that the investigations had proven that “al-Jazeera is being used by Hamas to help Help journalists advance their goals ”. The declaration was accompanied by a list of contacts Allawi is said to have maintained with radical forces. The list is believed to come from the Israeli secret service Mossad . It lists activities of Allawi such as the fight with Afghan mujahideen and a military training course in Pakistan in 1992 up to meetings with the highest Hamas officials in Damascus . Allawi confessed that he was recruited by Hamas in 1993 and that in 2006 he made an agreement with other correspondents to “use the work at Al-Jazeera to strengthen Hamas”. On the Al-Jazeera website, the released Allawi denied all allegations and accused Israel of using him to blackmail his station. There was "no evidence" against him, he said, adding that he only had professional contacts with Hamas and other groups.
