Samma is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian county of Lääne-Viru . It belongs to the rural municipality of Viru-Nigula . Samma is 22 km east of Rakvere .

history

The former knight seat Samm was first mentioned in 1583. In the 16th century it belonged to the Baltic noble family of the Treyden . In 1734 the Clapier de Colongues acquired the estate.

Later it belonged to the Staël von Holstein family for many years . In the 18th century, a palace complex was built in the classical style.

After the October Revolution of 1917, the Staël-Holstein family was partially expropriated during the Estonian land reform in 1919. In the course of this, Gut Samm was completely destroyed with the exception of a few commercial buildings.

In January 2013 the village had 34 inhabitants.

Attractions

In the village is the sacred grove of Tammealuse. The inhabitants prayed to gods here, made offerings and drew healing water from the springs. Later dance festivals and religious events were also held.
