Sammatti [ ˈsɑmːɑtːi ] is a former municipality in southern Finland . At the beginning of 2009 it was incorporated into the city of Lohja .

Sammatti is located in the west of the Uusimaa landscape around 65 kilometers northwest of the capital Helsinki . The former municipality of Sammatti is rural and has an area of ​​85.06 km² (13.05 km² of which is inland water). The only settlement center ( taajama ) of Sammatti is the eponymous church village , in which 872 people live (as of December 31, 2011). In addition to the church village, the parish also included the villages of Haarijärvi, Karstu, Kaukola, Kiikala, Leikkilä, Lohilampi, Luskala, Myllykylä and Niemenkylä. The last population of the municipality of Sammatti was 1,365.

The first written mention of Sammatti comes from the year 1406. In 1591 Sammatti became a separate parish. Sammatti is known as the birthplace of Elias Lönnrot , the author of the Finnish national epic Kalevala . Lönnrot was born in Sammatti in 1802. After his retirement he returned to Sammatti in 1862 and spent his old days there. Elias Lönnrot was very attached to his place of birth and donated a library and an elementary school to Sammatti. The house where he was born is today the most important attraction in Sammatti, along with the wooden church from 1755.
