The Samoan pound ( English Western Samoan pound ) was the valid national currency in Samoa from 1914 (occupation by New Zealand at the beginning of the First World War) until the conversion to the Samoan tala in 1967 . Like the British pound , the Samoan pound was divided into 20 shillings of 12 pence each. Coins were not minted, but imported from England and later from New Zealand . When New Zealand introduced the decimal system in 1967 and also replaced the pound with the dollar, Samoa followed this step and introduced the tala, equivalent to the New Zealand dollar.
