Sampadjudu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sampadjudu (also: Sampadjudo ) describes the language and inhabitants of the Cape Verde Islands outside of Santiago , more precisely: Santo Antão , São Vicente , São Nicolau , Sal , Boa Vista , Fogo and Brava . The dialect of Maio is so similar to Badiu Santiago that it is mostly not referred to as Sampadjudo . Sampadjudu is a variant of the Cape Verdean Creole .

Two explanations are given as the origin of the word:

  • são para ajudar (port: they came to help)
  • Sampaio Ajuda (Portuguese proper name)

Both versions indicate that during regional famine, people from other islands on Santiago were employed in so-called aid programs (ajuda) in road construction. Sampaio Ajuda was the family name of one of the administrators of these programs.
