San Carlos (Mendoza)

San Carlos or Villa San Carlos is a place in the province of Mendoza in the Valle del Uco about 100 km south of the city of Mendoza in Argentina . San Carlos is the capital of the department of the same name and is located in the Andes at an altitude of 942 meters. The place itself has about 6,000 inhabitants (in the entire department 27,353 inhabitants) and is not far from the Maipo volcano (5264 m) at the foot of which at 3,300 meters lies the remarkable Laguna del Diamante , which can be visited in suitable times of the year. In the village itself is the historic El Fuerte de San Carlos from General José de San Martín from 1770.
